Safety Main
The importance of a safe and healthy community was identified in the original desirable future statement “Brandon will be a Healthy Community.” The Health committee of the Community Strategic Plan originally developed from this desirable future statement. In 2008, the Implementation Committee recognized the need for a separate strategic plan committee to address the greater emphasis on safety in our community. Safe Communities Brandon and Area came forward as an existing network, with a mandate similar to the strategic plan goal, and an existing action plan to promote safety throughout the City of Brandon.
Safe Communities Brandon and Area’s mission is to provide leadership through a broad based, sustainable safety coalition that promotes a safety culture, making Brandon and area a Safe Community in which to live, learn, work and play.
Safe Communities Brandon and Area received its national designation in 2003 and won the Safe Communities Canada Awards of Excellence in 2006. Community Partners include Canexus, Koch Enterprises, Canadian Red Cross, Office of the Fire Commissioner, Manitoba Labour & Immigration, Brandon Regional Health Authority, Brandon Friendship Centre, City of Brandon, Manitoba Hydro, Maple Leaf Fresh Foods, Brandon School Division, St. John Ambulance and Career & Employment Youth Services.
Safe Communities Brandon and Area will be conducting its Priority-Setting Exercise in Fall 08. We will be looking at injury data for our community and adding our community’s knowledge about the injury issues we deal with day to day. We will use this information to agree on the injury prevention priorities for Brandon and Area.
We need to gather all the people in our community who are or could become involved in any way with injury prevention or safety promotion, to take part in this exercise. The Priorities we set during this exercise will determine our action plan for the next three years.
With a clearly defined role and committee members that are committed to increasing the safety of the City of Brandon the committee looks forward to working with the community in enhancing the wellbeing for all the citizens of Brandon.
